This month at Foco Nuevo

Friday May 30th, 2008.  8.00 p.m.

Jim Chapman: Jim Chapman is a guitarist, composer, singer and percussionist, born in Brisbane but who lived in South Africa from 1994 until 2000. He has recently released an album entitled "Afro No-Clash" featuring eleven of his compositions, all based on African musical ideas. While in Africa is performed, taught and produced a documentary series for Radio National called "When the West Met the South" in 1999. Since then he has been performing and directing large cross-cultural ensembles like "Kabombo-Kombo" and "Umoja" for shows at the Judith Wright Centre, The Brisbane Powerhouse and the Queensland Multi-Cultural Festival. For Foco Nuevo he will perform a solo set comprised of songs from his album as well as traditional African songs he learned while living there. Your feet are guaranteed to move.

RossCrow: first performed the percussive poetry of Ross Clark at the National Folk Festival in Canberra this year, and his most recent appearance at Ahimsa House was in a show with Margret RoadKnight last year. In his reprise appearance this month, RossCrow's solo line-up is voice, boots, drum and sometimes crow-stick, and his material includes new work and a selection from his most recent volumes. He is currently preparing his first CD for release. In April, Ross won the Australian Book Review Poetry Prize for his poem 'Danger: Lantana'.

Jumping Fences: Jumping Fences, the song-writing partnership of Lachlan Hurse and Sue Monk, have recently returned from a tour to Cuba and Mexico where they both performed and built on their long relationship with Latin American musicians. Accompanied by Ross Gwyther (saxophone and clarinet), Dan Simpson (drums) and James Harper (percussion) their eclectic music extends the folk tradition, and gives new insights into the breadth of contemporary life.

Light food will be available, including tapas, empanadas, cakes, tea and coffee.

BYO, while the Ahimsa house's application for a licence is still pending.

Entry is $8 and $5 (concession)
